I have a dream...

"And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification" -- one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; "and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together."
Part of a speech delivered at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963.

Notes on a Scandal

Notes on a Scandal is adapted from the novel by Zoe Heller. Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett) joins St. George’s as the new art Teacher. Barbara Covelt (Judi Dench) senses in Sheba a kindred spirit. But Barbara is not the only one drawn to her. Sheba begins an illicit affair and Barbara becomes the keeper of her secret. Notes on a Scandal is a story of loneliness, loyalty, envy and love. I have to say, I truly enjoyed this film with all its intensity. And, I agree, “If you don't already worship at the Church of Judi Dench, Notes on a Scandal may be the film that causes your conversion”. But for me, I must say…it does make me step back and beware of those Brits who write in journals…AFG!

Lambda

A friend of ours gave us a ceramic Lambda as a Christmas gift. And in the box was this short history of the Lambda. I felt it truly captured the depth of the history and power this symbol holds today in the hearts of so many.

History of the LAMBDA

The Lambda is the Greek letter “L” for Liberation. Originally, it was a pictographic symbol for the scales of justice and, in time, it began to represent the concept of balance.

In 1970, without knowing of the historical significance of the letter, the Gay Activists Alliance of New York designated the orange Lambda on a blue field as a symbol of gay liberation.

In December 1974, the Lambda was adopted as the international symbol for Gay and Lesbian rights by the International Gay Rights Congress meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Today, this symbol is worn with pride and the hope of shedding a little light on the darkness of bigotry.

blogging 2007

Time has just flown by and here it is first of the New Year and you have heard very little from me. So, to catch up I would like to share a few photographs that I took of our recent December
Ice Storm…

I’ve also decided this year to add a few new areas of interest to my blog. Periodically I will be posting Snapshots, Random Thoughts, and of course, Virginia Sightings. I’m looking forward to a fun year and hope you are up for the ride…you never know where the blogs will take you!
