the hills are alive with the sound of humming…

I’ve made it! I’m now a hummer and a two-word (NOT two-bit) sentence talker. I think I’ve hit the big times or at least in my world. By Friday, the doctor says I can use full sentences – no whispering – and that in a couple more weeks I should be back to normal (whatever that is…). My tongue is still very numb; he said that usually lasts a week (he told me for one patient it lasted a year…that did not give me encouragement). And, what is it about ENT specialists? They stick something down your throat and are surprised when you start to gag! I almost tossed my lunch on his shoes. Oh well, life is still good in my silent world…and the silence has allowed my inner voices to rise up…just call me Sybil. Enough for now.

24 hours after surgery...

nine hours to go…(but who’s counting?)

It’s now 9 hours to surgery and the clock is a ticking. I just finished my “last supper” at Square One Brewery with the family and soon I will be taking the dreaded “vow of silence” for 3 to 4 days…I’m sure, in a very small way, ali is relieved that she soon will have some peace and quiet to herself especially in the morning so she can read her paper without me chatting up a storm. And, the boys, well you can guess they’ll be happy not hearing my words of wisdom (lectures)…. I’ve had quite a few well-wishers for my surgery these past few days…I have some really good friends and family members in my life that I would not trade for the world…lucky me!

two days and counting...

Well, time has just about run out…soon, way too soon Friday will be here and I go under the knife to remove the cyst on my vocal cords. It’s been a long 6 months but the day has arrived. Last Friday we had a little gathering of friends for “The L Word” happy hour (that would be “The LAST Word”) and due to the creativity of my good friends I have plenty of ways to communicate and keep myself occupied during my recovery period. As you see from the picture, I will be using an E-Racing Slate, a glow slate for those neon kind of messages, a DoodlePro magic slate that I can hang from my belt loop, an interesting doodle pad that I am sure will keep me occupied for hours…enough said, a very loud horn that I can wear on my finger and scares the dogs half to death, and a fun ice cube tray (for jello shots??) to soothe my throat! And how could I forget the great and holy clicker with a complete detailed poster of instructions…and last but not least, the most entertaining flash cards created by all my family members (sampled here) with truly the most appropriate quotes I use most often around the house…

Great Day In The Morning!

Meet Hummer, our newest arrival on Pennsylvania! Hummer is the very first Humming Bird to come to our feeder. We have been trying for over a year to attract the birds. Now, of course, they could have been coming for days without us noticing but in any case they are here and hopefully will be staying. So, stay tuned as news develops on our little Hummer and soon I’ll get an even better picture of him!
